December 2023: I love to share my journey of writing with fountain pens and inks here on this You Tube channel. I make regular videos each month about what I'm writing with and I update mid month with a progress report on how each pen/nib and ink is doing. Also, I'm likely to review anything I get really excited about that relates to the fountain pen hobby. I'm in my 7th year of making You Tube videos and I enjoy connecting with other fountain pen people + talking about books, cats and fixing an old house. My husband and I are retired and this venture here on You Tube is one of my hobbies - it brings me a lot of joy. In the beginning, I reviewed a lot of inks but that became something I didn't enjoy the repetition of after a few years. However, I still really enjoy talking about how a specific ink does for me in a specific pen/nib. Thank you for joining me. I keep ads on the channel to help me fund my postage for pen pal writing, and to pay for other hobby supplies!

Pre Fountain Pen Palette
Переглядів 1 тис.16 годин тому
In this video, I show you and talk about my little experiment to recreate my 5 pre-fountain pen days "color palette" ... which turned into 9 inked TWSBIs and a comparison of the purple, turquoise and pink sets I created one from the past and one representing today's top favorites black, red and grey. It was a lot of fun and I used only what I have on hand for pens, inks and paper so it fit grea...
Pen Fast Chat #2

This is Pen Fast Chat #2 where I talk about my quest to apply intermittent fasting techniques to hobby spending by creating a "fasting window" where I don't buy hobby related things like pens, inks, or notebooks until after Sept. 30th. The "feast" or spending window will come later in the year when the Nov/Dec fountain pen sales start! See that video for more info: ua-cam.com/video/hdIqPk5cdt0/...

I draw several similarities and talk about pitfalls I expect to encounter as I embark on a 3 month pen fast for the 3rd quarter of 2024 (July/August/September). This is the only the opening conversation about this topic which I expect to revisit...

Diamine Inkvent Day 1-10 Recap & Personal Update
So, it doesn’t really mean to buy pens faster, lol. Actually I have already started to do this also, not with the idea of never buying pens again, but with the idea of enjoying the pens I have.
nice review! I don't own a purple ink but I may give this one a try :)
What I have inked always is a black and a blue. My selection was seriously decreased when I left my apartment (I couldn't manage it's lack of handicapped accessibility. ) My beloved family threw out all my ink, trying to "help." Grrr... So I have Platinum Carbon Black cartridges in my Platinum pocket pen, and currently 2 blues: both Waterman, Serenity Blue and Mysterious Blue. Both bought because they were cheap, from Amazon. And I have an avowed dislike of many blue inks. 😂 But they are very well behaved on cheap copy paper (a necessity for dealing with doctor's forms and the hunt for a new place. ) Currently the Mysterious Blue in a black Esterbrook J with a 2550 firm "posting" nib (their version of an accounting nib, and this is the first extra fine I've ever used that was actually one I've liked to use, and I've had several other equivalent. Even a "properly tipped" 9550, the top end version. The Serenity Blue in a gray J, with a very worn 2668 firm medium (again, folded tipping, not "proper osmiridium tipping"), almost worn to an italic. Because I like it.😉 I have 2 more inks, currently. Because I wanted to try them, and the brand is highly regarded, KWZ Spruce Green and Cappuccino. Spruce Green is very like the emerald greens every American brand had in the past. It's really close to Waterman's current Green (I've compared them. Bought some Waterman for my niece. ) And almost as well behaved on cheap copy paper. Have it in a medium Jinhao (whatever number that the biggest of the Dadao series is 😁). Still deciding on what pen is going to get the Cappuccino. Knowing me, a copper Esterbrook. I'm still hunting for a couple core inks I've had before. Both from Sheaffer: Blue-black, the only quintessential one that isn't iron gall, and Red. The blue-black was my first bottle in 1983, and it's the nostalgia for me. Red because it's not exciting, but THE red. Only completely true red I've ever seen, and it's the same color as the red from a BIC multipen. So I associate it with teachers.😂 Need several more inks, but they'll wait until I get my own place again. And I've kinda decided that I like the basics. Getting the complete range from the "Deco bottle" era from Parker, I discovered the basics were my aesthetic. Don't need vintage to meet this, but similar (though I STILL despise "schoolboy washable blue."😂) And to get an assortment that I can use a different color each month, not just what they used in the past. But, for pretty much constant use, it's a black, blue and blue-black. I have simple tastes. 😁
Thank you for the site and book info. I’ll check it out. I love your pens. That Sakura is just gorgeous. All of your Benus are beautiful! You reminded me that I need to ink up wild strawberry again! And that grey Athena is so pretty. I am a grey lover!
Love you July selections Chris. Purchased my 1st Lamy in a long, long time (Pink Cliff) and forget how nice they are to write with. Might have to resurrect my old ones
Another nice collection of inks/pens for the month; thanks Chris!
Hi Chris, i agree june seems to be flying by, maybe because I love the summer so much, even the 90-100*F . I have a nice fan where i work and as long as there’s no snow, I’m happy! Ive been looking at a new-for me- benu but with 3 birthdays in july, i should be fasting on pen buys! That book club sounds interesting ,i will go and have a look, thanks for the info! Happy july 4th.
Thank you Chris. I love the Diamine Strawberry. You're right, it is a happy colour. You've made a very interesting selection of pens and inks. I'm looking forward to your report. You're much better than I am at controlling the number of pens that you have inked. I have many more than eight; I can't help it. Thank you also for the book club recommendation.
Thanks for the info on the Stoic channel, I will check it out. Also, I really like Zeus and Athena. Those are the two inks I have from Laban.
Another interesting video. Thank you for sharing.
Hi @RitaCwise
I love your collection! I also have the BENU in Cherry Blossom and love it so much! 😮🤩that BENU Scepter is so pretty! Oh wow 🤩 that Laban Zeus is so beautiful 😍 and Sailor Louisiana!
Hi @CheriRosePlans -- I'm wondering now how Laban Zeus will look in a M nib. I may try it as I am not going to replace my GVFC Stone Grey until my fast is over and until I use up some of the other grey inks I have. :)
I adopted your layout for this month :)
Hi @lagreenwitch awesome!!!!
I appreciate you so much for doing these videos it really keeps me interested in the hobby its like one of the favorite parts of my momth when you do Chris's inked pens I feel like sometimes I do so many reviews people get tired of seeing my mug for a while but then there are days where people come and hang out in the chat which I appreciate so much.. I hope youre feeling better the heat got to me today for sure it was 85 today here in so cal and it was a nightmare the aircon was barely keeping up on full blast I worry for those who have elder conditioners that are gonna crap out and the electrical systems crapping out I hope that people are smart and if they have a broken aircon go to the mall go to the library go somewhere where its cool even if you just go shopping for a while some of those stores have nice aircon and if you feel like your gonna have heat stroke go to the hospital they have aircon and generators they dont need the grid so Be safe out there I look forward to seeing your letter very soon <3 take care give Manuel and the kitties a hug for me <3
Hi Marilyn!!! I wound up with 15 pens to start July 1st with .... lol and 2 videos .... but then again, I'm going to be writing so much this month ... trapped inside avoiding the heat. I'm sorry you have had heat to deal with too! I'm gonna hit the pen pal writing this morning and hope this holiday week sees me caught up for a few minutes at least lol. :)
I think the most I've ever had inked up at once was 12 but that quickly went to the birds cause I kept running out of ink lol
@@ChrisSaenz13 Wow 15 I think thats the most pens youve had inked up I currently have 13 and I have 1 space left in my home made pen holder I think thats the most pens I've had inked up at once LOl so I hear ya
Nice Benus, I'm more a Jinhao guy, yes my 9019 came in very handy when I cut a finger last month & couldn't grip any pen but my 9019. Now I see Jinhao is slimming them down (9016 and 9013). Always a wealth of information in the ink dept. that dark blue Iroshizuku and Robert Oster Lake of Fire made my wish list. The TWSBI Go reminds me of the Kaweco Sport too small for longer writing sessions.
Hi @honnony -- the 9019s are so easy to grip -- I really like them more than I imagined. :)
That pen case with the pouch is very intriguing! I'm standing firm in my fast though!
Hi Courtney - Levenger has I think the best sales in December although their summer sale gets hyped more. I got my case on sale in late November. Stand firm. There are always sales later on!!!! :)
@@ChrisSaenz13 I'm holding off till Black Friday 🛍️ 😊
I worked with a very talented interior designer that told me his secret whenever trying to find a color to work with a busy, colorful pattern was to pick the color that was the least found in the pattern - so your instinct for picking Louisiana ink for the Benu talisman cherry blossom was”genius” 😘
Hi @SuSuSham oh cool -- it's rare for me to do anything remotely genius unless I'm viewing it from a sarcastic lens lol. :) I was surprised how pleasing the combination is. But don't ever ask me to choose wall paint. I have had some disasters I don't even like to think about. :)
Hey Chris, you have an interesting lineup of pens/inks for the coming month!! For me, I had been debating on getting a Scepter/Grand Scepter off & on for some time. I just can't decide right now. I've become more interested in flex writing, and recently got a Zebra G nib that I want to put in my Jinhao X750. I also recently acquired a Waterman's #14 that is close to 124 yrs. old that has a wonderful flexible gold nib. Asa-gao is one of my go-to blue inks. I've also decided to get the Sailor Manyo 5th anniversary Tsuyu, Ishi, & Yu inks. I also have Robert Oster Lake of Fire, and a bottle of River of Fire that I like a lot. So if you want a different color that is a green/teal and haven't tried it, give River of Fire a try. Enjoy the month!!
Hi @zeus52452 oh yes I did enjoy my sample of River of Fire too that is a fun ink with lots of sheen if I recall correctly! One thing I like about the Scepter is that it won't roll off the desk!!!! That and the astounding beauty of the pen body and the smooth nib too. :) Happy July!
Asa -Gao is a favorite of mine. Thanks for the video. Seneca? Facinating.
Hi @Calcprof
Loved your pen and ink choices, although I was expecting to see more pens '3024 letter writing pens' :D lol. I'm off to check out that book club channel now, tfs. :)
Oh my goodness what a ridiculous typo I made! I know why. It was time to call my Mom just as I completed editing and I normally would have looked over everything again. Goodness. LOL Glad you mentioned it ... I was still oblivious.
1. I vastly prefer the Scepter shape of this Benu over their other shapes. Still can't deal with the glitter. 2. Perhaps you already know, SBRE Brown has over a hundred videos on Stoicism. And of course he is extremely well-spoken, in English, since he's Dutch. 3. This week I start a new project, a gigantic watercolor, 9' x 3.5'. Pen stuff will be less focussed and serious, for maybe a year, unless I finish/give up early.
Hi Ichiro --- it's so funny because I went quite awhile thinking Benu pens were not for me ... that changed last year when I got my Talisman and then when the viewer sent me 3 Benu pens I had never seen in real life I found out I really love the Euphoria and the glitter ... it did surprise me! Yes, I've seen most of SBRE Brown's stoicism videos - they are great! I had been wanting to read Seneca's Letters for a long time but I wanted a community experience of it so I was pretty excited when that bookclub came up over on Accept the Universe' channel. Have fun with your watercolor!!!!!!!!
The Sailor Louisiana is gorgeous. Is that some shading coming through as well? Laban’s Athena looks interesting as well. Happy writing in July.
Hi @loracharis6814 yes I'm seeing quite a lot of shading with Sailor Louisiana on the 68 gsm Tomoe River paper! :)
Lovely choices. Off topic, I had 2 female Siamese cats and one was named Athena and the other we named Loki due to her mischief...lol. Your Athena ink just brought back memories. Thank you for sharing.
Hi @BlushnBlue awe .... cat memories are the best! :)
I just got back from my honeymoon, and I purchased some Montblanc ink while I was there, so I’m thrilled to jump back into some pen and ink things! So happy to see your new uploads as always!🤍
Congratulations! Oooh how fun Montblanc inks are so awesome! :)
👌🏻👍🏻
I am a big fan of wild strawberry but one of my favorite inks of all time is Noodler's Liberty's Elysium. It is a Goulet Exclusive but it is a gorgeous blue with some permanence. It does stain things Pink which is a bit surprising but also can be a turn off for some, but I love to have it in my TWSBI Eco Transparent Blue. It's a perfect match!
Hi @tompov227 -- oh I remember I really liked my sample of Noodler's Liberty's Elysium!!! It's gorgeous. :) That would be a great choice for July!
Wow! I really am looking forward to seeing how these inks and pens will do this month. I have several BENU and Lamy pens. They are always my go to pens. Oh, I need to get a sample of the Laban Zeus for my newest red BENU. Thanks for doing videos for us.
Hi @cynthiarichter792
Always love to see what you're writing with. I'm still writing with my June pens. I was writing so much in April but in May I fell behind due to family emergencies. So May pens went into June and now June pens are going into July. I don't ink up new pens unless I'm down to one or two. When I saw you had a Robert Oster ink, that reminded me I had a Robert Oster ink for the month but it ran out. I was using a sample and thought how much I love the ink and maybe I should just get a bottle. Then I had to clean out the pen and it took FOREVER. I even had to get out the Goulet pen cleaner. After that I decided I don't want a bottle of it.
Hi @ubacat1617 -- I've had that experience before with shimmer inks where I said .... never again. The only one of JHerbin shimmers that I didn't get along with was their black/dark grey one I can't remember the name. I hope July will be a much calmer month for you!!!!!
"Chris' Inked Pens - July 3024..." Wow, you haven't aged in 100 years! What is your secret? :) I really like the scepter - so many sparkles.
Oh wow lol I really did it this time with that typo ... :)
beautiful collection, thanks for sharing
Hi @impish22
Hi Chris- Thamk you for the video and a very Happy Anniversary! Best regards!
Hi Chris. You got me thinking about my pens before before fountain pens. I loved Energel and still do. Yep. I still use them. Before fountain pens, my favorites were the brown, black, red, teal, violet, and navy blue. In the last few years they've come out with new inks: Sepia, Forest Green, Lilac & Grey. I preferred getting the ink refills and putting them in the nice alloy pens. There's also a metal one that caps and I think that one is still selling on Amazon. These pens still work for me when doing home office work. I can't be bothered trying to remember to cap my fountain pen every time I put it down when working. really like how you went down memory lane to recreate those colors.
I too had a gel pen period for years but fountain pens have taken over. My fave gel pen color dupe is diamine hope pink. Such a brain stimulating hit pink!
Hi @kellyandthehorses2877 -- it's so nice isn't it .... being able to refill the pens so easily and switch inks .... having so many choices of color will keep me forever with fountain pens. We have only a few stragglers and most of the gels pens left my husband has put black ink into them. LOL
What a creative and fun way to play with your pens.
😮 ballpoints are evil. 😪
LOL
Until recently I had a similar setup, with 8 of my Beginner pens filled with my 8 basic colors, primary, secondary, brown and black, in a little pouch. I filled a sketchbook with drawings using two at a time. Took FOREVER. Now I want to keep fewer pens inked, and I'm switching over to some nicer pens, Sailors and Franklins-Christoph. So now of course I see that I have NINE pens inked, how did that happen?
Hi Ichiro - I go back and forth between being real careful about too many pens being inked at once to being very over inked which is what July will be with 15 lol but it's okay. I write a lot and will carry the TWSBIs much longer than July to finish them. :)
Glad your back from your 24hr. bug. Wow, 9 TWSBI Ecos, how many letters do you write a month? I thought I was extravagant with one Eco and a beautiful Jaipur V2 from Fountain Pen Revolution. I'll add Faber Castell Stone Grey ink to my wish list. Thanks for your guidance.
Hi @honnony -- oh these 9 are just for my notetaking and journals mainly ... I'm inking 6 broad nibs for July letter writing. :) I expect these 9 will run lots longer than July though and I'll see which colors I missed .... I already wish I had inked a brown ink. :)
It sounds like you had the Noro virus. 🤢 nasty little bug that lasts about 48 hours and it’s over but it makes you feel like death warmed over until it’s gone. I’m glad you’re feeling better. I love your videos.
The colors is EXACTLY why I got into fountain pens!!!! I used Papermate!! The G2’s as well!
Hi Elaine -- it's so wonderful to be able to have almost unlimited ink color choices!!!!! :)

Hi @MarcellHobbs -- Thank you and Happy Anniversary to you all too! It's amazing how much life has changed in terms of how we get the simplest things these days! :) I never thought I'd order small stationery things online ... but I've embraced it totally in the past 7+ years.
